CANNEY AND PLUMB TAKE FOURTH AT WATKINS GLEN

Watkins Glen, NY (5 July, 2008)—Mike Canney and Hugh Plumb overcame heavy traffic and an overheating motor to take fourth place with the No. 60 Sunset Hills Vineyard Ford Mustang FR500C campaigned by Rehegan Racing in the Grand-Am KONI Challenge Glen 200 at Watkins Glen on Saturday night. The race result marks the second consecutive strong outing for the duo, who finished second in the previous round race at Mosport.
 
The two and a half-hour Glen 200 event saw plenty of yellow flag laps, which interrupted the racing, but proved to be fortuitous for the pit strategy employed by the team.
 
“We gambled with our strategy to come in when we did, but it paid off in the end,” said Canney, who started the race from midpack, running a short stint before turning the machine over to Plumb at the second caution. “Before the race, (Crew Chief) Quinn Conda, Hugh, and I thought there might be a lot of cautions, and we decided that we would pit earlier than normal if the opportunity came.onship points.  It was a little disappointing to have to come in, but this was the right choice to maximize our championship points. Hugh did a great job saving fuel during the cautions, and each time we had a green, he moved up strongly through the field, running as high as third during the race. This was a great finish for the team, and keeps our momentum up for our next race in 2 weeks down south.”
 
Plumb was also pleased to emerge with another top five race after a hectic fight to the finish.
 
“I think because of the overheating, the car wasn’t making full power and the car was really a handful by the last few laps,” said Plumb. “But I was just hammering at it to get it where it was. It became a real game of survival at the end, and I was just using every trick I could think of to save enough fuel to make it to the finish. We had quite a battle going for fourth, but I just didn’t have anything for the (third-place finishing) 90 car. Mike did a great job to turn the car over in good shape like he did, and thanks to the yellows we just saved all the fuel we could to make it to the end.”
 
The No. 60 Sunset Hills Vineyard Ford Mustang will be in action once again in two weeks’ time at Barber Motorsports Park for round six of the 2008 KONI Championship.
