CANNEY AND PLUMB TO GET BACK ON THE HORSE IN IOWA
Newton, IA (6 August, 2008)— After their Ford
Mustang was thrown off course on the very first lap
of the race in the last round of KONI Challenge competition
at Barber Motorsports Park, Mike Canney and Hugh Plumb
are looking forward to getting back on the horse and
making up lost ground in the championship standings
with a strong effort in the No. 60 Sunset Hills Vineyard
Ford Mustang FR500C prepared by Rehagan Racing on Sunday
at Iowa Speedway.
The 250-mile race will feature nearly fifty entries
as the KONI Challenge stages a combined ST and GS class
race for round seven of the 2008 season. The 1.3-mile
circuit boasts both ends of the racing spectrum, with
a flat-out oval section as well as a very confined
road course layout within the oval.
The Iowa event marks the first visit to the oval-based
road course for Canney and Plumb as teammates. Plumb
qualified second for the 2007 event and led over ninety
laps of the race, giving the duo extra optimism for
the race weekend.
“I’m looking forward to re-visiting the
area, said Canney. During my college years, I
rode a bicycle across Iowa 4 times as a part of RAGRAI
(the Des Moines Registers Great Annual Bike Ride Across
Iowa), and I am sure we passed through Newton.”
"Our last race at Barber produced a disappointing
result for us, but we are only midway through the season,
and we have a great team to get us back on track and
in to the points. As a driver, I'm looking forward
to racing the next two weekends and we should be back
in contention for the championship. I am ready
to produce a strong finish at Iowa.”
Further buoying the outlook for the weekend is the
hope that the Ford Mustang, which took first and second
in the 2007 event, is once again well suited for the
track as the No. 60 looks to move up from fourth in
the championship standings.
"The biggest thing will be for us to just stay
out of trouble and get into a good pace early on," said
Plumb. "Iowa and then next week at Trois-Rivieres
are two tracks where you have a lot of concrete around
you so that doesn't leave any room for errors like
we were victims of recently. Quinn Conda (crew
chief) has both the No. 58 and No. 60 cars ready to
go, and everyone on the team is ready for this
fast weekend."
The weekend race schedule features a promoter test
day on Saturday, with an early morning practice session
and then qualifying before a Sunday afternoon race
to close out the weekend, which will also see the USAC
Silver Crown Machines featured on Sunday afternoon.
