CANNEY READY FOR A NEW CHALLENGE AT MILLER
(17 September, 2008) — Just three weeks after
a disappointing Grand-Am KONI Challenge race outing
at New Jersey Motorsports Park, Mike Canney will look
for better fortune this weekend as he adds another
race track to his racing resume in the SunRichGourmet.com
event at Miller Motorsports Park.
Canney will have a good resource in his first race
visit to the 4.486-mile facility outside of Salt Lake
City in the form of co-driver Hugh Plumb, who scored
second in the 2007 edition of KONI Challenge competition
at the track. The two will look to break a run of three
consecutive hard-luck races with the No. 60 Sunset
Hills Vineyard Ford Mustang FR500C in the penultimate
round of the 2008 KONI Challenge season.
The race weekend comes at a busy time for Canney, who
is also overseeing the harvesting process now commencing
at Sunset Hills Vineyard. The Virginia vineyard has
already started to harvest grapes for the two white
wine varieties on offer, with the harvest for the four
red wines that Sunset Hills produces lasting well past
the KONI season-finale race at VIR in October.
Canney and Plumb made thier way to Utah earlier this
week to take advantage of some seat time in a Ford
Mustang in the Miller Motorsports Park Performance
Racing School to be better prepared for the tracks’ 24
turns. After Thursday’s promoter test session,
Canney was glad that he had.
“It’s a long lap but it’s a lot of
fun,” said Canney. “The team did a great
job to have the entire front end of the car fixed for
us after the crash in New Jersey, so we are ready to
go this weekend. We’ve had a few frustrating
races lately, but we want to just put that behind us
and have a good race here at Miller and hopefully get
back on the podium. It was really good preparation
to be in the Miller school Mustangs. There is a lot
to this track so I felt a lot more comfortable today
because of the laps we were able to get in earlier
this week, so hopefully that pays off in qualifying.”
The Sunset Hills Vineyard machine will start the race
from 17th on the grid, with the two hour and thirty-minute
race slated for a Sunday green flag at 11:15 AM local
time.
